Fans and critics alike can't get enough of SteamWorld Dig 2, the numerical follow-up title to developer Image & Form's hit steampunk-inspired 2013 release and the fourth overall game in the SteamWorld series. SteamWorld Dig 2 first released for consoles back in September of last year, hitting basically every major platform on the market except for the Nintendo 3DS, which was a curious omission considering that each of the other SteamWorld games has released for some iteration of the DS hardware. The haitus wasn't long, though, because Image & Form has just revealed that it's finally bringing SteamWorld Dig 2 to the Nintendo 3DS next week.
Players who might have enjoyed SteamWorld Dig 2 on other platforms will note that the 3DS version will be no slouch in the performance department, as the team at Image & Form have optimized the game to run at 60 frames per second even with the handheld's signature stereoscopic 3D effect activated. According to a press release for the game, players with different or older 3DS systems should still find that SteamWorld Dig 2 "runs like a charm even on the earliest iterations of the hardware."

Also within the game's press release, Image & Form CEO Brjann Sigurgeirsson stated that the team kept news of the 3DS release quiet because of the team's special connection to the DS hardware:
"[We've] kept quiet on purpose about one platform," Sigurgeirsson said, "because it's very special to us. It's the hardware that put us on the map with the original game, and now that we've come full circle, we couldn't be more proud."
Players will be able to scoop up SteamWorld Dig 2 through an exclusive digital release in the Nintendo 3DS eShop on February 22, where it's slated to cost its standard price of just $19.99.
