Microsoft launches Xbox bug bounty program with rewards

Microsoft is launching a new Xbox Bounty Program to reward gamers, security researchers, and anyone else who discovers security vulnerabilities in the Xbox Live network and services. Bounty rewards will range from $500 up to $20,000, and Microsoft notes there could even be higher payouts depending on the quality of the report and the vulnerability impact.

The biggest payouts will be handed out for critical remote code execution and elevation of privilege flaws, while security feature bypasses, information disclosure, spoofing, and tampering will all include rewards up to $5,000. As Microsoft is opening this up to gamers and anyone who has the skills to find flaws, it’s expecting high-quality reports with a detailed write-up or video demonstration, and a clear proof of concept. Microsoft isn’t looking for people to perform DDoS testing, social engineering attacks, or going too far on server-side execution issues.

Microsoft has run bug bounty programs for a number of its products over the years, including payouts of up to $250,000 for Windows 10 security bugs. This new Xbox Bounty Program comes just as Microsoft prepares to launch its Xbox Series X console and xCloud game streaming service. Both will operate on the Xbox Live network. Sony and Nintendo also accept security bug reports, with Nintendo rewarding up to $20,000 and Sony only providing a t-shirt as recognition.

PlatinumGames' hero adventure The Wonderful 101 Remastered is coming to PC

The PlatinumGames tease from earlier today has been revealed as a Kickstarter for a remastered version of The Wonderful 101, the superhero game released in 2013 for the Wii U. We noted in our original report that a remaster had been rumored for the Switch and PS4, but it turns out that a PC version, which had previously gone unmentioned, is also going to happen.

The initial Kickstarter goal of $50,000 for a Switch version of The Wonderful 101 was surpassed almost immediately, while stretch goals for a Steam release at $250,000, and a PS4 version at $500,000, were demolished shortly thereafter. The campaign is only a few hours old at this point, yet is already well over $450,000, and still climbing rapidly.

Further stretch goals, which seem almost certain to be hit, will include "a host of amazing extras" and potentially even more platforms. The Kickstarter will run until March 6, and the game is slated to ship digitally in April. (Physical rewards aren't expected until November.) That's cutting it pretty close, and anyone who's backed a Kickstarter previously knows to take such dates with a grain of salt, but PlatinumGames said that because the core content of the game is already established, "we are confident in the development schedule and guarantee that backers will receive their copies in a timely fashion."

As for why PlatinumGames needs a Kickstarter after its success with Nier: Automata, the studio said that it's grown over the years but still hasn't reached the point where it's able to self-publish its own games. It recently received a capital investment from Chinese conglomerate Tencent, but The Wonderful 101 Remastered plan precedes that agreement, and so that investment will not be used to fund the project.

"Support from players and fans is vital in making this happen. With your help, we can create these brand new additions to make The Wonderful 101: Remastered the definitive release you all deserve, and bring it to more platforms so everyone can enjoy," the studio said in the Kickstarter FAQ. "And of course, all additional content funded through stretch goals will be made available to backers for free!"

Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser is leaving the company

Dan Houser, co-founder of Grand Theft Auto developer Rockstar Games, will leave the company in March. The news comes from an SEC document registered by publisher Take-Two Interactive (via @Nibellion on Twitter). This move comes after an “extended break” taken by Houser that started in the spring of 2019. Rockstar Games was founded in 1998, and Dan Houser contributed prominently to the company’s successful franchises, including Grand Theft Auto, Max Payne, Red Dead Redemption, and more.

Take-Two Interactive is the holdings company for Rockstar Games, and it hasn’t officially announced the departure yet. Here’s the snippet in full, straight from the document:

After an extended break beginning in the spring of 2019, Dan Houser, Vice President, Creative at Rockstar Games, will be leaving the company. Dan Houser’s last day will be March 11, 2020. We are extremely grateful for his contributions. Rockstar Games has built some of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful game worlds, a global community of passionate fans and an incredibly talented team, which remains focused on current and future projects.
Dan Houser co-founded Rockstar Games with his brother, Sam Houser, who is currently the president of the company. In a statement, Rockstar Games said that “Sam Houser’s role with Rockstar Games, which he founded in 1998, remains unchanged,” but did not elaborate further on Dan Houser’s upcoming departure.

Netflix published, then deleted, details of a brand new Resident Evil series
A synopsis for Netflix’s Resident Evil adaptation was apparently prematurely uploaded to a press-only website the other day, giving fans an indication that the show might be on the way soon.

The story takes place in the fictional town of Clearfield, Maryland, the backyard of Washington, D.C., the Umbrella Corporation, and “the decommissioned Greenwood Asylum.” All three are involved in the creation of the T-Virus; the show is set 26 years after the virus’ discovery.

Greenwood Asylum and Clearfield, Maryland, apparently are new settings to the canon of the 25-year-old franchise. Deadline reported last year around this time that Netflix was working on “a scripted series based on the hit action horror franchise,” which has spanned almost two dozen games and remakes since 1996.

Resident Evil has also been the basis for for a six-film series, starring Milla Jovovich, that collectively grossed more than $1 billion for Sony Pictures from 2002 to 2017.

Metro Exodus is finally coming to Steam one year after its Epic Games store debut

Metro Exodus is finally coming to Steam, after its sudden departure in the weeks leading up to its initial release date last year.

The official Metro Twitter account confirmed that Metro Exodus will hit Steam on February 15, one year to the day after it first came out on Epic Games store and consoles. Take note of the fact that the Tweet specifically calls this out as a "return" - which is accurate, since Metro Exodus had a Steam listing and even took pre-orders on the digital platform up until it was abruptly removed.

The reason for Metro Exodus' exodus was a late-breaking exclusivity agreement with the Epic Games store. Publisher Deep Silver took responsibility for the decision, saying at the time that it was "based on the goal of investing in the future of the series and our development partner at 4A Games." Deep Silver also said that agreement with Epic was why it was able to charge $50 for the game on PC rather than the usual $60.

Shortly after Metro Exodus' removal from Steam, Valve itself posted a message on the game's page explaining why it had disappeared. Valve called the decision to remove the game "unfair to Steam customers, especially after a long pre-sale period". There's been a lot of consternation over Epic Games store exclusives in the last year or two, but the complexity of the situation around Metro Exodus is probably the worst it's ever been (with the possible exception of Shenmue 3).

Deep Silver has never commented on how well Metro Exodus sold on Epic Game store, but at least now we'll be able to get a hint at how well the Steam version does based on its concurrent player count.
