Microsoft updates Windows 10, improving search results and simplifying calendar entries

Microsoft’s latest update to its Windows 10 operating system is focused on improving the quality of existing features — like simplifying the creation of calendar items and upgrading the search experience — rather than adding new tools that users have to learn.

The upgrade, which the company announced in a blog post on Tuesday, marks Microsoft’s semi-annual enhancement to its flagship operating system, which powers over 900 million devices, including PCs and tablets. Even as Microsoft pushes deeper into cloud software and infrastructure, it still counts on Windows for 16% of revenue.

While Apple rolls out one MacOS update per year, and Google and Apple each issue new versions of their mobile operating systems annually, Microsoft has stuck with its pattern of two major releases each year since 2015, when it released the original version of Windows 10. Prior to its current pattern of updates, Microsoft used to issue new versions of Windows every few years.

Some users have expressed concerns that there were too many big updates, which can be a particular challenge at big companies with thousands of employees that need to stay on top of the changes.

“Today, we are announcing that the Windows 10 November 2019 Update is now available for users on the most recent versions of Windows 10 who seek the new update via Windows Update,” John Cable, Microsoft program management director, wrote in the blog post. “We have worked to make this a great experience for all devices, and an exceptionally fast update process for devices running the May 2019 Update.”

Having started on Tuesday, Windows 10 users can request the new update by going to Settings, then to the Update & Security page and then the Windows Update section. From there, they can hit the Check for update button.

A more feature-rich update will follow in the first half of 2020.

Path Of Exile 2 Is Revealed

Describing Path of Exile as a Diablo clone doesn’t begin to do the game justice. The developers at Grinding Gear Games took the loot-driven action RPG framework pioneered by Diablo and built a creative and compelling alternative that’s unlike any other game on the market. PoE’s creators have never been afraid to think outside the box and they’re at it again. Path of Exile 2 was revealed at this weekend’s ExileCon event and it looks terrific.

PoE2 is a creative solution to a knotty problem. The original PoE is a very good game that’s built on an interlocking set of complex game mechanics. It works and it works well. But the developers came up with a lot of ideas about how things in PoE could be done differently as they refined and evolved their game over the years. The problem was many of these ideas would break the excellent game they were already running.

Rather than try to introduce substantially revised systems into Path of Exile 1, they combined them into PoE2. The standard move at this point would be to replace the old game with the new one but Grinding Gear didn’t want to do that. PoE1 is a great game with a devoted and loyal fan base. It didn’t make sense to drop it just because they had a variant of the game they thought was just as much fun to play.

Grinding Gear’s solution was to treat the two games as different campaigns and combine them into one game. Path of Exile 2 presents a seven-act storyline that takes place 20 years after the events of the original game. The two campaigns run on parallel tracks leading to the same atlas end-game content. All the expansion content from the past six years of development along with any cosmetics players may have purchased will be available in both.

Path of Exile 2 has the same set of seven character classes as the original but there are 19 new Ascendancy classes and the skill system has been redesigned. Characters in PoE2 will also be able to shapeshift at any time if they have the relevant skill. Bosses at all levels have been improved.

The complex gem system has been thoroughly revised. In PoE1, gems are slotted in individual weapons and pieces of armor. Replacing your gear means reconfiguring your gems which can be fiddly and annoying. Sometimes I find myself running with less than optimal gear because redoing the gems is just too much hassle. In PoE2, each type of weapon or armor has its own unique gem configuration and gems are slotted in a separate gem interface. If you want to change the gems slotted in the bow you’re using, you do it in the gem interface. If you find a better bow, all you have to do is equip it and the gem setup in the interface is automatically applied. It’s a huge improvement.

Path of Exile 2 also features physically-based rendering and a new lighting model. Characters have new models and animations. PoE1 didn’t look bad but PoE2 looks better.

The developers expect a beta for Path of Exile 2 to launch near the end of 2020. That’s a long time to wait for a game that looks so promising I want to play it right now but there will be things to look forward to in the meantime. More information about POE2 will be revealed in the coming months. Path of Exile 1 will continue to be updated on the regular schedule throughout the coming year and changes designed for PoE2 that can be introduced without breaking the original will be added during the build up to the beta.

Anthem is reportedly getting a major overhaul
BioWare is reportedly working on a big update for its troubled online shooter, Anthem, in the hopes of turning its fortunes around.

The report comes from Kotaku’s Jason Schreier, who has found that the plans for changes have been in the works for a while now and are internally referred to as “Anthem Next” and “Anthem 2.0”.

As you’d expect, the planned changes are significant and could see drastic alterations applied to some of the game’s key systems, including but not limited to its loot, missions, difficulty, social aspects and the game map generally. What’s clear from the report is that the game’s developers are dedicated to keeping the game alive, regardless of the many pronouncements of its death.

Anthem anathema

According to one source, teams at both of BioWare’s offices have “spent a few months just tearing it down and figuring out what needed to change fundamentally (a lot). And we’ve been rebuilding for another few months since.”

Times have been difficult for the game after a series of high profile staff departures and development delays and the need for an overhaul was acknowledged as far back as September when BioWare’s head of Live Services acknowledged fan concerns over issues in the game and said the team was doing a “thorough review” rather than plumping for quick fixes.

At the moment, however, there are no specifics with regards to how exactly the game will change or even when players can expect to see the changes implemented. With so much to alter, there are even still discussions over whether it’s better to roll out smaller updates, go for one big update or even release an entirely new game (although naturally, Kotaku notes, current players wouldn’t pay full-price for changes if that was the case).

Anthem isn’t the only game on BioWare’s plate, either. Dragon Age 4 is still in development and according to Schreier, there’s even a new Mass Effect title in its very early stages too. As such, Anthem’s future is likely to be foggy for a while longer until reports of planned changes are confirmed or denied by BioWare and EA themselves.

Xbox Game Pass adds 50 games including Yakuza and (almost) every Final Fantasy

Xbox revealed at the X019 show, that it was adding several new games to the library of Game Pass — including at least one series that’d previously been PlayStation-exclusive.

Game Pass is perhaps Microsoft’s biggest weapon in the ongoing arms race against the other consoles. It’s just a darned good value, and it seems like the company is tripping over itself to add more and more games to Game Pass’s vault. Today, it revealed it’s adding 50 new games to the service, including big titles like The Witcher 3, Tekken 7, and Rage 2. You can see the complete list here.

Perhaps the biggest coup yet for Game Pass is the Yakuza series. These quirky action games-cum-Japanese epics were previously Sony-exclusive. I don’t know what Microsoft offered publisher SEGA to get them to the Xbox, but I’m happy, because everyone should play at least one Yakuza game. Of course, it won’t be releasing every game — just Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami, and Yakuza 2 Kiwami. Still, those are all excellent games, and it sets the stage for later remakes/remasters to be ported over as well.

The company is also getting every main-series Final Fantasy game made since FFVII (except XI and XIV), which is probably part of Square Enix’s efforts to resell its old classics (see also: the Switch getting a crapton of Final Fantasy). A lot of these were already playable on Xbox One via the console’s backwards compatibility, but it’s still a big haul to add. On a similar note, the two current-gen Kingdom Hearts games that weren’t already available on Xbox One — Kingdom Hearts 1.5 + 2.5 ReMix and Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue — will be coming to Xbox One, but not through Game Pass. They’re available to buy now on the Microsoft Store.

Just to make it even more appealing, the company’s also adding a number of non-game goodies to Game Pass Ultimate, including one month of EA Access, three months of Discord Nitro, and six months of Spotify Premium.

Microsoft revealed a number of other things at this year’s event, including that it’d be adding 50 new games to its Project xCloud streaming service, which will also be coming to PCs next year — curiously, the company specifically said xCloud will support the Dualshock 4 controller at some point, so maybe this is more of that curious truce Sony and Microsoft seemed to have formed. Also, PC users will soon have the option to remote install games from the Game Pass app, eliminating a potential headache for those who use the service primarily on their computers.
