‘The Last of Us II,’ ‘Watch Dogs: Legion,’ And Others Just Got Delayed

It’s not weird for video games to get delayed, but it is weird for them to get delayed immediately after a release date was announced. But that’s exactly what’s happening with The Last of Us Part II, which will no longer be released in February 21 but now on May 29.

“It was during the last few weeks, as we were closing out sections of the game, that we realized we simply didn’t have enough time to bring the entire game up to a level of polish we would call Naughty Dog quality,” said director Neil Druckmann in a blog post announcing the delay this morning. “At this point we were faced with two options: compromise parts of the game or get more time. We went with the latter, and this new release date allows us to finish everything to our level of satisfaction while also reducing stress on the team.”

The Last of Us Part II was also not the only game delayed today, weirdly.

As part of their earnings call, Ubisoft revealed Watch Dogs: Legion, previously scheduled for March, would move to their next fiscal year, between April 2020 and March 2021. Gods & Monsters, Ubisoft’s riff on The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, was also delayed from February into an ambiguous, to-be-determined slot. And Rainbow Six: Quarantine, a spin-off of the company’s popular multiplayer shooter, will also be released within that long window.

According to a tweet by Kotaku reporter Jason Schreier, the delay of Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us Part II will impact the release of another high-profile PlayStation exclusive, the reclusive Ghosts of Tsushima from Sucker Punch. It’ll still be released in 2020, according to Scherier, but will arrive “later in 2020,” to avoid bumping up against The Last of Us Part II.

Google Plans to Found Multiple 1st-Party Stadia Studios, First One Coming to Montreal

Stadia has managed to attract wide support from third-party developers, but Google also has plans to release their own exclusive first-party content. In fact, according to Stadia Games & Entertainment boss Jade Raymond, they plan to eventually open several first-party studios.

"We have a plan that includes building out a few different first-party studios, and also building up the publishing org to ship exclusive content created by indie devs and other external partners."

Google has announced the first of those studios will located in Montreal, a hotbed of video game development home to numerous other major studios. Raymond promises this new studio will deliver “original content across a diverse portfolio of games in all your favorite genres.” Of course, the question remains – when will this new content arrive considering the studios are just being set up now? Don’t expect any big triple-A games for a while, but Raymond insists Google is in this for the long haul…

"It is a long term view that Google is taking. For a big bet and a huge new IP that's going to fully leverage the cloud, it may be several years. But we do have quite a few exclusive games in the works that will demonstrate some of the exciting things about the platform all along the path. It won't be four years before gamers get to see the new exclusive, exciting content. There will be some coming out every year, and more and more each year. "

It will certainly be interesting to see what kind of exclusives Google might be able to cook up. Will they be able to use the power of the cloud to create some truly unique experiences? Or will their games be as bland and unexciting as the Google home page?

Best Buy is offering free next-day delivery for the holidays as the battle for fast shipping heats up

Best Buy has followed Amazon and Walmart into the delivery race this holiday season.

The electronics retailer will offer free next-day delivery for thousands of items in multiple markets on orders of $35 or more, the company announced in a press release on Tuesday. It added that 99% of Best Buy customers would have access to the delivery option.

Customers in 42 US cities will also have access to same-day delivery for orders placed before 3 p.m. local time, the company said.

The announcement comes with the holiday season around the corner and amid a race among retailers to win over deal-hungry shoppers.

"We want to help our customers get their orders even faster, especially in time for the holiday shopping season," a representative from Best Buy said in an emailed statement. "We've made significant investments in our supply chain over the past few years, so we can get our customers their orders even faster."

The representative said that Best Buy has added new e-commerce distribution centers in the Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago metro areas, which have helped reduce fulfillment time.

"In addition, we have expanded the number of carriers we use to deliver packages, providing us with more options for how to get orders to customers as quickly as possible," the representative said.

Best Buy said in September that it would make a massive bet on the aging population of the US by introducing a slew of health services and devices. Wedbush analysts warned shortly after that the company's aging customer base "will die out" and younger consumers will likely shop elsewhere.

As the competition for online shopping intensifies, Best Buy's foray into next-day delivery could represent a shift toward catering to a younger, tech-savvy consumer base that is more inclined to shop online.

"Like everything at Best Buy, it always starts with the customer," Chief Supply Chain Officer Rob Bass said at an investor meeting in September. "Our customers want and deserve convenient, fast options to receive our great products — and they want it on their terms."

Walmart launched a free next-day delivery option in May, less than three weeks after Amazon said it would cut its Prime program's default shipping speed to one day.

Best Buy will offer free standard shipping all season for items in markets where next-day delivery isn't available.

Kingdom Under Fire II goes to war in the west on November 14
It's taken almost a decade to arrive, but Gameforge's online RPG Kingdom Under Fire II is finally prepped and ready for its western release, and will arrive on PC in North America and Europe November 14.

As a quick refresher, Kingdom Under Fire II is an "MMORTS" title set in the fantasy world of Bersia. Players control armies under the flags of The Human Alliance, The Dark Legion and The Encoblossians as the three factions fight it out for dominance of the continent. Kingdom Under Fire II first launched in Asia some years ago, and will hopefully find success with its long-awaited arrival in the west.

KUF II is already available to pre-order over at Gameforge's website, where it is sold at three separate price points, each offering different starting content. The standard edition of the game will run $30, while the all-in "War God" edition can be purchased for a meatier $100.

Suda51 & Swery65 -Collaborating on horror game

Yesterday we got a strange piece of news from the Suda51 & Swery 65 that they would officially be announcing today. Suda51 of course is known for the cult classic No More Heroes, and Swery 65 known for the other cult classic Deadly Premonition. Both games announced sequels to their respective games for 2020. What we didn’t see coming is that the duo are combining forces to create their own horror game. However, in perfect form, it couldn’t be in a more unorthodox way.

This is not going to be your stereotypical horror game with zombies, massive, blood, gore and the like. Suda51 and Swery 65 were making a food-themed, PlayStation VR game. Yes, I had to read that three times over as well. That game, however, was canceled and the two hopped on an IGN Japan stream yesterday to announce the news of their new horror game. Now to be honest this seemed more like a brainstorm session between two like-minded gaming developers. It sounds like during the live stream, Suda and Suehiro want the game to be simple and playable on platforms on Nintendo Switch, Google Stadia, and mobile.

The name seems to be up in the air with the duo coming up with Hotel Barcelona as the title, but they eventually come to the conclusion that “Barcelona” could be replaced with South Africa, Tokyo, and other countries. The game should be set to an indie budget and it actually sounds like Devolver Digital (responsible for Hotline Miami and other great titles) would be publishing the game. The details of the game clearly aren’t set in stone and the planning process is continuing for this game, but these two coming together is a collaboration we need

Yeah, due to RL chaos I was unable to do my weekly gaming, technology, and science video roundup. I thought of recording my opinion on other people's opinions on F76 1st, but only the script I was writing in my mind seemed like I would rant for 30 minutes (as opposed to maximum 12 min), so I let my tiny hissy fit go unrecorded. Maybe it was for the greater good. Maybe not. When I have time I may doeet just for the sake of doing it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Great issue, SunKenRock ❤
