Shanghai Dragons, San Francisco Shock make Overwatch League stage 3 grand finals

The upsets just keep coming in the Overwatch League stage three playoffs. While stage two champions San Francisco Shock have made it to their third stage final, the Shanghai Dragons defeated stage one champions Vancouver Titans. The teams will compete on July 14 for a $200,000 prize and the glory of a stage championship.

In the first semifinal match, the Shanghai Dragons defeated the Vancouver Titans with a commanding 4-1 scoreline. On first map Ilios, and throughout the entire match, the Dragons’ DPS Yang “DDing” Jin-hyeok used his signature Pharah to demolish the Titans. Vancouver bounced back on the second map to tie up the score at halftime. Despite the tie, many fans and analysts expected the Titans to rally and take the series.

Unfortunately for Vancouver, the rally never quite came. Vancouver were competitive as usual on Control map Volskaya Industries, but something in their ranks dissolved once Shanghai selected Havana. The Dragons full held the Titans, denying them even one point of completion on the Escort map. Shanghai flex support Yang “Luffy” Seong-hyeon’s Ana play consistently stopped the Titans in their tracks.

Vancouver attempted to push the triple-triple composition on Oasis to come back in the series, but the DPS-heavy Dragons took them down. This was, in a way, a redemption arc for some players on the Shanghai Dragons.

Last year, many players on the current Dragons roster were a part of Overwatch Contenders Korea team KongDoo Panthera—nearly everyone on the Vancouver Titans was on RunAway. RunAway took the Contenders championship, but not before KongDoo Panthera pushed them to an eight-map series.

In a post-match interview, Dragons DPS Bae “Diem” Min-seong talked about his team’s ability to rally against the Titans and talked trash to his possible future opponents. “San Francisco Shock has about a 0.01 percent chance of beating the Shanghai Dragons,” Diem said.

Nintendo reveals the Switch Lite

Nintendo has announced the Switch Lite, a brand new model for Switch. The system launches on September 20 in three different colors.

The Switch Lite is all about handheld play, meaning it won’t connect to a TV. The Joy-Con are now attached to the device and can’t be removed, and now has a dedicated control pad. The motion camera and HD Rumble have also been removed.

Here’s the full announcement:

In a video today, Nintendo introduced Nintendo Switch Lite, a device designed specifically to play Nintendo Switch games in handheld mode. The Nintendo Switch Lite system launches Sept. 20 at a suggested retail price of $199.99 and will be available in three different colors: yellow, gray and turquoise. A carrying case and screen protector set for Nintendo Switch Lite will also be available.

“Adding Nintendo Switch Lite to the lineup gives gamers more color and price point options,” said Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser. “Now consumers can choose the system that best suits how they like to play their favorite Nintendo Switch games.”
The flagship Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017 and offers three different play modes: playing in TV mode by placing the system into a Nintendo Switch dock, playing cooperatively or competitively in tabletop mode by sharing Joy-Con controllers and playing in handheld mode. The system comes with either Gray Joy-Con controllers or Neon Red and Neon Blue Joy-Con controllers.

Nintendo Switch Lite has integrated controls and is smaller than the flagship version of Nintendo Switch. It has no kickstand and, as a dedicated handheld gaming device, does not support video output to a TV. Therefore, it does not come with a dock or HDMI cable.
The new device can play all games in the robust Nintendo Switch library that support handheld mode*, although some games will have restrictions. Compatible game modes will be listed on the back of game packaging and in Nintendo eShop.

Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch Lite owners can get together to enjoy compatible multiplayer titles like Super Mario Maker 2, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Splatoon 2 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate together via Nintendo Switch Online** or local wireless multiplayer***.

Amazon is developing a Lord of the Rings MMO

Amazon Game Studios has announced its latest project: a Lord of the Rings massively multiplayer online game that Amazon is developing in partnership with Leyou. It’s planned as a free-to-play title for both PC and consoles.

The title was actually announced last year by Leyou-owned Athlon Games. At the time, Athlon was said to be working with an unnamed “partner developer,” which was revealed today to be Amazon Game Studios.

According to Athlon’s announcement last fall, the new MMO is set “at a time long before the events of The Lord of the Rings, exploring lands, people and creatures never seen before by fans of the Tolkien universe.” That may sound similar to Amazon’s upcoming Lord of the Rings TV series, which is also said to be set in Middle-earth long before J.R.R Tolkien’s main series. According to Amazon, the show and the game are being developed separately and are unrelated projects.

Between Amazon and Leyou, there’s a considerable amount of previous MMO experience: Leyou owns Warframe developer Digital Extremes, and Amazon Game Studios is already deep in the development process for its first MMO, New World, which should help assuage fears that such a beloved IP is being handled by relative newcomers.

Amazon’s Lord of the Rings MMO also won’t be the first MMO based on Tolkien’s world. The Lord of the Rings Online has been around since 2007, offering players a new adventure to play alongside the events of the trilogy during the War of the Ring, with the most recent update released in October 2018.

There are no details yet regarding when Amazon expects to release the MMO or on which consoles it’ll be available, but we’re expecting to get more details as development continues.

Microsoft Internet Games services are finally being ended

Gaming has always been a big part of the Windows experience, a relationship Microsoft put a special emphasis on with the release of Windows ME in 2000. It included not just the usual must-play titles like Spider Solitaire and Minesweeper, but a series of five games that you could actually play on the internet—against other people!

I make fun (lovingly), and the Internet Games suite obviously didn't revolutionize the industry, but it was actually kind of a thing for some people. Dedicated gamers had been playing online for years prior to that, but for people with no real online experience (remember, this was two decades ago) or whose gaming habits never got beyond a few rounds of Klondike while they were stuck on hold, the idea of playing checkers against some other person in some totally different place could be pretty exciting.

But all good things come to an end, and so too will Internet Games. Microsoft has announced that Windows XP and ME services will be ended on July 31, while Internet Games services for Windows 7 will be halted on January 22, 2020.

Kingdom Under Fire 2 Finally Launching in Europe & North America Later This Year Through Gameforge

No, it’s not a terribly delayed April 1st joke. Kingdom Under Fire 2 is finally coming to Western territories, specifically Europe and North America, as announced today by Gameforge.

The game, like its 2004 predecessor, combines action roleplaying elements with real-time strategy elements. This sequel, originally announced in 2008, also adds MMO elements to the mix.

Sejung Kim, CEO of Blueside, said in a statement:

Blueside has always sought a publishing partner with significant experience and a deep understanding of the Western online games market required to properly service Kingdom Under Fire 2. Based on their unique and extensive experience bringing Asian multiplayer titles to Western markets, we believe Gameforge is the publisher we’ve been looking for. We are very excited to collaborate with Gameforge to finally introduce Kingdom Under Fire 2 to fans throughout Europe and North America.
Tomislav Perkovic, Chief Product Officer of Gameforge, added:
The Kingdom Under Fire series is a favorite among those of us at Gameforge, so we’re very excited to partner with Blueside to continue this epic saga and finally bring it to Western markets for the very first time. We are determined to help Blueside realize their vision of the ultimate MMO, launching Kingdom Under Fire 2 for Windows PC in North America and Europe later this year.
The game will be available later this year on PC through ‘multiple digital platforms’. Check out below a new batch of screenshots that came alongside the press release. Official updates from the developers will be posted through the new Facebook page.
Kingdom Under Fire 2 is set in a world where three powerful factions — the Human Alliance, Dark Legion, and Encablossians — compete for control over the land of Bersia. Players can choose from several hero classes and focus on building up their individual characters, or command massive armies as war strategists. Kingdom Under Fire 2 takes place 50 years after the events of Kingdom Under Fire: The Crusaders and features an immersive multiplayer story campaign that can be experienced online multiplayer.

So it seems that if I start playing Rainbow Six Siege I risk meeting my future wife? I need to think better about this.
