The All Controller

With the addition of the Nintendo Switch, I now have five video game consoles connected to my television. That means a lot of HDMI cables, but it also means a lot of controllers laying around. When you start adding second (or third, or fourth) controllers for multiplayer games, things add up quickly.

The team at All Controller think they have the solution. The small group is working on what is essentially a universal remote, but for game consoles. It looks a lot like an Xbox One gamepad, but it works with a range of devices, including PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PC, Mac, iOS, and Android. (Support for the Switch and Wii U is also in the works.) This week, they launched a Kickstarter campaign to help fund production, with the goal of launching next May, and it’s already breezed past its initial funding goal.

I’ve had my hands on a prototype of the All Controller for the last few days, and it’s a surprisingly robust gamepad, especially considering it’s not the final product. For one thing, it’s very solid. Third-party controllers generally feel cheap and, in almost every instance, are a step-down from what comes packed with the console. But the All Controller doesn’t feel like that all. It’s like a cross between a Dual Shock and Xbox One pad, marrying the design and functionality of the two in a sturdy frame.

But the most important part of the All Controller is something that you won’t see on other controllers: a tiny LCD screen. It’s here where the power of the device comes out. For starters, it’s how you connect the controller to the various devices around your house. The All Controller includes a number of preinstalled drivers for all of the platforms it supports. The actual syncing process differs between platforms. To connect to iOS, for instance, you load the iOS driver on the All Controller, and then hop into your iPhone’s Bluetooth settings to find and connect the controller. On console, you simply plug in a provided USB dongle, and then load the appropriate driver. It’s a fairly seamless process.

The screen also lets you noodle about and alter some aspects of the controller as well. For instance, on a platform like PC, which supports both keyboard and controller, you can choose which one you want your controller to emulate. If you pick a keyboard, you can then pop into the menu to tweak which controller buttons represent which keys. You can also do things like adjust the sensitivity of the sticks or swap around the button placement.

For the most part, the controller worked great when I played around with it, whether it was getting in some time with Cave Story on my MacBook or digging more into the PS4 remaster of Final Fantasy XII. But it does have some niggling design issues. While the LCD screen is incredibly useful, it also adds an extra step to everything; the controller doesn’t function when the LCD is lit, so you’ll need to keep remembering to turn it off to play. Similarly, a toggle switch on the top is used to turn the All Controller on and off, and there were multiple times when I picked up a dead controller because it was never switched off. It’s not something I have to remember with any other controller, so it was very easy to forget.

Overwatch’s Summer Games event returns Aug. 8

Overwatch’s original seasonal event, Summer Games, will return to the game on Tuesday, Aug. 8, Blizzard Entertainment announced today. This year’s version of the Summer Games event will include new skins and updates to the Lúcioball game mode, as well as the return of cosmetics that were released last year.

Lúcioball will return to Overwatch as a limited-time event, and this year Blizzard is adding a new stadium, Sydney, alongside the returning Rio stadium map. The developer is also changing some of the rules for Lúcioball; Blizzard has removed the ability to “boop” enemies with Lúcio’s Soundwave attack and has changed the way his ultimate ability works. It no longer pulls the ball toward the player, Blizzard said, and instead increases Lúcio’s speed and the speed of his “boop.”

Blizzard is also introducing a competitive ranked mode for Lúcioball.

Guild Wars 2: Path of Fire

Guild Wars 2 developer ArenaNet announced today that it will launch the second expansion pack for its MMO later this year. Titled Path of Fire, that expansion will take players into a new region of the game’s world on a quest to confront a malevolent god.

Building on threads from the recently completed Season Three of Guild Wars 2’s episodic “Living World” content, Path of Fire will see players journeying to the Crystal Desert. This harsh region was a major locale in the first Guild Wars; in Path of Fire, longtime players will be able to see how the area has changed 250 years in the future, when Guild Wars 2 is set.

The story of Path of Fire has players chasing after Balthazar, a long-missing god who has recently returned and wreaked havoc across the world. Balthazar is looking to hunt down and kill the elder dragon Kralkatorrik, but if he does so, it may have a cataclysmic impact on the world at large.

In addition to five giant new open-world zones to explore, the expansion will include the addition of mounts. While they’re common in massively multiplayer online games, Guild Wars 2 has avoided them to this point. Even now, however, ArenaNet is putting its own spin on this familiar element of the genre.

PUBG Update

The team behind Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds released details on its fourth monthly update today, and it’s a big one. Top of mind for fans is the ability to honk the horn in vehicles with a click of the mouse button, but there’s a lot more going on under the hood. Or the bonnet. Or the boot? Depends on where you live, I guess.

Car horns: It’s the little things, really, but the addition of a car horn to Battlegrounds has really lit a fire under people. Horns can be honked by the driver only, and default to the left mouse button.

New rifle: Battlegrounds is continuing the tradition of placing its newest weapons in crates, which are dropped on the map from a cargo plane. This month, it’s the American-made Mark 14 Enhanced Battle Rifle.

The Mk14 EBR is chambered in 7.62 and accepts all sniper rifle attachments. It’s selective fire as well, so a steady hand can use it to clear rooms or to reach out and touch someone a few hundred yards out.

New faces and hairstyles: This update is the first to offer new face presets and new hairstyles. Changing your look will still cost you 3,000 in in-game currency, however.

First-person only servers: A new gametype was added today that limits your perspective to the first-person. The goal here is to cater to hardcore, military-simulation types (like me!), but the mode has a lot to offer for more casual players as well.

Playing in first-person means that you can no longer see around corners or inside buildings without exposing yourself to fire. In order to adapt, you’ll want to make liberal use of the lean buttons (which default to Q and E) and think about how you’re moving around the battlespace. It will be much harder to tell if you have concealment when you can’t see yourself in the third-person, so plan accordingly the next time you tuck into a shrubbery.

Sound occlusion: Today’s patch notes mention that sound volume has been tweaked depending on where the source is. What that means is that there is less confusion as to where your adversaries are. If those footsteps you can hear while you’re in the attic sound quiet, they’re likely outside. If they’re louder, then you must have some uninvited guests downstairs.

Xbox controller support: For people with repetitive stress injuries or for those who just like playing with a controller, Battlegrounds now supports Xbox controllers. It’s a move that makes sense, considering that Bluehole plans to release the game on Xbox One.

Kill stealing: Finally, there’s a new feature that should limit the practice of “kill stealing,” or sniping players who have been first downed by someone else.

“Some people killed knocked-out teammates in order to avoid giving kill count to an opponent who knocked them down,” the patch notes state. “Now the kill count will still go to the opponent in this specific case.”

Battlegrounds’ next update is expected in September.

great issue, question for all you hearthstone players. do you think they will ever add co-op or team games? like 2v2. That is the only way I would heavily get into that game..... Dont get me wrong 1v1 card game is fine but 2v2 i feel would be amazing.

Interesting idea, having one universal controller for multiple consoles!

I probably won't end up getting it myself, though. Between my amount of free time to game and my inability to focus on more than one game simultaneously, I only have one system that I use at a time. Add to that that I have a big stack of Xbox games on my to-play list, so I won't be changing that console out on my TV anytime in the forseeable future. In other words, I'm not such a heavy gamer that I'd save any time and effort by consolidating to just one controller.
